Policy and Market Development for Sustainable Products and Services in Developing Countries
Brain Lab conducted by GTZ / WHITE LAB
This Brain Lab will explore incentives for consumers to move towards more sustainable lifestyles in less affluent countries and possible mechanisms to overcome the unique constraints in developing countries to accelerate the development of markets for sustainable products and services.
Key issues the workshop will explore include:
- Required actions to extend the reach of the poor to gain access to sustainable products and services
- South-South-North “trialogue” on opportunities to shift toward BRAIN LABS sustainable products within the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)
- opportunities to market development for sustainable products and services in emerging or newly industrialized countries
- mechanisms that enable access to sustainable products and services for low income groups in society
- information on real world project implementation in India and Brazil and discussion with representatives from government energy sector institutions in these countries.
Policy and Partnerships for Sustainable Products and Services in Europe
Brain Lab conducted by CSCP / PLENARY
This Brain Lab will explore the issue of challenges and opportunities to the mainstreaming of Sustainable Products and Services through various forms of partnerships.
Key issues the workshop will explore include:
- understanding how actors in value chains can effectively collaborate to define principles for sustainable products
- potential roles for retailers, manufacturers and public authorities to collaborate in communicating sustainable product information to consumers
- how effective partnerships can be established for use phase and end of life responsibility
- identifying optimal means to collaborate with the aim of influencing consumers to chose “sustainable products” and educating consumers to chose sustainable lifestyles..
Products and Services for Sustainable Lifestyles
Brain Lab conducted by Wuppertal Institute / GREEN LAB
This Brain Lab will explore the driving forces for sustainable lifestyles and factors that influence needs and desires for sustainability, factors to focus upon when encouraging sustainable lifestyles, and the process of bringing knowledge to action.
Key issues the workshop will explore include:
- factors and driving forces that influence lifestyles generally, and triggers for a need and desire for a sustainable lifestyle
- focal points and factors that support sustainable lifestyles
- necessary behavioural changes and how to bring these into reality
- what can be done to provide researchers and consumers with real life insights into production and consumption
- provision of information to bring about behavioural changes in different social milieus? Following thought-provoking presentations participants of this Brain Lab will formulate several topics for changing lifestyles towards sustainability.
Design for Sustainable Products and Services
Brain Lab conducted by ecosign / YELLOW LAB
This Brain Lab will explore technological, creative, aesthetic and communicative strategies for sustainable product design in order to bundle expertise, stimulate new ideas and find better solutions for sustainable product and service design.
Key issues the workshop will explore include:
- technological approaches to sustainable design concepts and perspectives beyond pure technology
- the contribution of sustainable design in overcoming contradictions between aesthetic requirements and sustainability related product attributes
- opportunities for design to influence behaviour in product use and consumption
- implementation of sustainable product design in practice
- a demonstration of how and why the language of forms is a crucial dimension of design and the relevance of aesthetic reflection as an important aspect of sustainability
- priorities and new approaches for sustainable product and service design
- action areas, problem solving potentials, and strategies for sustainable product design at all stages in the value chain.
Resource Efficient Technologies for Sustainable Products and Services
Brain Lab conducted by EFA / BLUE LAB
This Brain Lab will explore methods to holistically optimise production systems with the aim of reducing waste, operating supplies and inventories, raw materials and energy consumption.
Key issues the workshop will explore include:
- recycling and value chain process integrated optimization as opposed to still dominant “end of pipe” approaches
- holistic optimisation of production systems to reduce waste, operating supplies and inventories, raw material and energy consumption
- roles of research in supporting the commercialisation of EU environmental technology, particularly in the upstream elements of the products lifecycle
- necessary partners to further develop eco-friendly technologies and bring successful eco-products into the market
- barriers to adaptation of new ecotechnologies, particularly for small and medium sized enterprises
- how ambitious standards and regulations can serve as a framework setting tool to foster eco innovation and technology development.
